Understanding Your Wisdom Teeth

Sure, having a tooth taken out may sound like a very big deal. But these troublemakers are usually better out than in. The procedure doesn’t take long. Healing can be simple. The drama-free process makes removal the obvious choice.

Fun Fact: Keeping these chompers won’t make you any wiser. Wisdom teeth get their name from appearing by the time you’ve wised up and matured. Most permanent teeth emerge around the tween years, while wisdom teeth make their entrance years later.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Molars are used to grind down food before swallowing. The third set of molars are considered wisdom teeth. While others are useful, these teeth aren’t needed. Left to their own devices, these extra teeth can get out of line.

Wisdom Teeth May Be:

EMERGED

This tooth surfaces above the gum line. Removing these calls for a simple extraction.

IMPACTED

This situation can be much more complicated. The tooth becomes trapped and needs a complex extraction. There are four main types:

  • Distal. This extremely rare type of impaction is about as common as a unicorn. Teeth are angled away from the mouth. These molars may be partially or completely impacted.
  • Horizontal. Known as the most painful of the four, these fully impacted teeth stay under the gum line. Coming in sideways can put nearby teeth in danger of getting pushed.
  • Mesial. This type of impaction is fairly common. These partially erupted teeth come in at angles facing towards the opening of your mouth.
  • Vertical. Although these fully impacted teeth may seem like they’re developing in a normal position, they could still crowd other teeth.

Why do I Have These Teeth if They Need to be Removed?

It may sound strange to get something natural removed. A common theory revolves around evolution. Our early ancestors needed these extra molars to rip up chunks of wild beasts and roots they ate.

Primitive humans had larger jaws to accommodate wisdom teeth. Silverware wasn’t available to cut food into bitesize morsels. Our diet and lifestyles changed dramatically over the years making these molars useless.

Reasons for Wisdom Teeth Removals

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Okay, so maybe you still need some convincing before you happily plop down in the dentist’s chair. Having your wisdom teeth removal performed can lead to:

A Comfort Upgrade

Let’s be real. Most of us don’t like pain and these teeth can cause a great deal of it. Get rid of the offenders and you get rid of the pain. Even if you aren’t in agony, an extraction can eliminate throbbing and uncomfortable sensations. Become comfy in your own skin!

An Enhanced Palate

Findings show that having a wisdom teeth removal can boost your sense of taste. A Penn Medicine study revealed that these effects are long-lasting as well. Plan to savor flavors to the fullest!

Better Health Overall

A wisdom tooth left unchecked can become infected. If this infection were to enter your bloodstream, affected blood vessels could lead to high blood pressure. You’re then put at a greater risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke. Remove yourself from harm’s way with an extraction.

Fewer Aches and Pains

Wisdom teeth can be a real pain in the neck- literally! These molars have been associated with headaches, jaw pain, chewing discomfort, ear pain and even neck trouble. The pain may be mild at first or can come and go. Over-the-counter pills only do so much. A removal is the surefire way to end this torture.

Improved Oral Health

Even if your wisdom teeth miraculously came in without any issues, problems may crop up in the future. The location of these third molars puts them on a slippery slope. Being able to floss and brush them regularly is a chore because of how hard they are to reach. Plaque can build up, then decay starts wreaking havoc on your teeth and gums. Bone loss is also a threat. An extraction can help tremendously.

Jaw Protection

The function and well-being of your jaw can be significantly impacted. These molars could be causing pain in your temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The jaw is also at risk for developing tumors and cysts when these teeth become unruly. Your jaw’s best defense is a swift wisdom teeth removal.

Lasting Alignment

Achieving that noteworthy smile may not have been easy. Along come wisdom teeth and they could flush those years of braces down the drain. These molars can barge into the mouth with no invite, even when there’s not room. Teeth can become overcrowded and begin shifting. An extraction can keep things where they belong.

Less Time and Money Spent at the Dentist’s Office

This proactive approach can prevent you from having to get costly procedures later. Having wisdom teeth removal before they become a problem is a smart risk reducer.

Wisdom Teeth Removal Frequently Asked Questions

Can I go back to work the next day after a wisdom tooth extraction?

The answer to this question varies, but generally no. The average person needs anywhere from 48 to 72 hours of recovery time. That’s not to say you can’t get back to work in a limited capacity if you work from home. If your line of work requires physical labor, taking off several days may be in order.

Can I shower after wisdom teeth removal?

Hot showers are not recommended for 48 hours after surgery. Opt for a relaxing bath instead.

Do I need a complex or simple extraction?

Dr. Mansoor can give you a comprehensive exam and review your X-rays to determine which type of removal you’ll need. Although there can be some overlapping, third molar extractions tend to fall into two categories:

  • Complex. These extractions are done to remove impacted wisdom teeth. A general anesthetic or sedation is typically required. These kinds of surgeries can be complicated. A highly trained dental professional like Dr. Mansoor is needed to perform this procedure well.
  • Simple. This type of extraction is done when a wisdom tooth is exposed above the gum line. Regular dental tools can be used to remove these molars. A local anesthetic is usually all that’s needed in this quick process.

Wisdom Teeth Hurting

Do they break your jaw to remove wisdom teeth?

NO! Don’t fall victim to circulating rumors. The jaw remains completely intact during a normal wisdom tooth removal.

How is wisdom teeth removal recovery?

The time it takes to heal can be dependent on how well aftercare instructions are followed. Recovery can go like clockwork if you stick to recommendations such as:

  • Avoiding certain activities. Don’t lift anything weighing five or more pounds. Don’t lie flat. Don’t use a straw soon afterwards. Refrain from smoking for as long as possible but at least 72 hours. Don’t spit or swish for at least 48 hours. Wait at least four days before hitting the gym at full force. Don’t blow your nose for at least three days after upper wisdom teeth are removed.
  • Controlling bleeding and swelling. Expect some bleeding and swelling. Biting on a wet tea bag placed on the site for 30 minutes can help. Keep your head elevated. An ice pack can be applied to reduce swelling. Wrap a bag of frozen peas in a towel and apply in 20-minute intervals.
  • Keeping post-op appointments. We schedule aftercare appointments to make sure you’re healing properly. If you don’t come in, we can’t assess your progress. We also can’t address any potential problems. Make every effort to keep these important appointments.
  • Leaving wound alone. Resist the urge to poke at the removal site with anything- even your tongue. Bleeding could result from touching and an infection could occur.
  • Maintaining oral hygiene. The day after surgery, begin gently brushing and flossing but avoid the surgical site. After 48 hours, swish with saltwater (teaspoon of salt in glass of warm water) four to five times a day for five days.
  • Managing pain. If you have been prescribed pain medication, have it filled. Take as needed. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking prescription pain pills.

Arnica Montana 200C can help with bruising. Place three tablets under your tongue three times a day for a week.

Hypericum 200C can assist with nerve regeneration. Place three tablets under your tongue three times a day for a week. Begin this medication seven days prior to surgery. Do NOT take if you are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or mood stabilizing medications.

The above homeopathic medications may be purchased at markets specializing in healthy and organic products.

  • Restricting your diet. Avoid drinking carbonated beverages for at least 48 hours. Soft foods are your friend. Smoothies, protein shakes, applesauce, soup and yogurt are some good options.

How long does pain last if wisdom teeth aren’t removed?

This answer is different for everyone. A third molar can cause pain from the way it emerges. If the tooth comes in at a strange angle, gets stuck or juts up against other teeth, it becomes impacted. This condition can cause anything from a mild irritation to severe pain.

An abscess can cause extreme amounts of pain. This situation happens when food particles get trapped around a partially exposed wisdom tooth.

Long-term discomfort can come from headaches, TMJ, your neck and other areas. Let Smiles by Hanna help. Dr. Mansoor can give you a thorough exam to determine how to get you living that pain-free life you deserve!

How much does surgical extraction of wisdom teeth cost?

Usual costs can run anywhere from $2,500 to $4,500-plus, but we’re currently offering this service for just $1,750.*

*Special is subject to terms and conditions. Price may change at any given time due to circumstances beyond our control.

How much downtime do you need for wisdom teeth removal?

Typical patients can expect to resume normal daily activities (within reason) 48 to 72 hours after surgery. These two to three days should be spent resting and relaxing while keeping your head elevated.

If there are complications after wisdom teeth removal, prepare to rest for several days. Even if you feel alright, you need this time to recover.

How should I prepare for wisdom teeth removal?

Although this type of surgery is common, planning ahead can make all the difference with the wisdom teeth removal process.

Weeks and Days Leading up to Surgery:

  • Get groceries. Buy some soft foods that are easily prepared such as soups, gelatin, oatmeal and cottage cheese.
  • Make plans. Schedule enough time off from school or work. Arrange to get help with the kiddos and/or pets if need be. Set up a quiet, cozy space for your recovery. Remember to add plenty of pillows to keep your head elevated. Catch up on calls and household chores beforehand so you can concentrate on healing.
  • Purchase supplies. Have cold packs, frozen peas and tea bags on hand to help reduce swelling. Take stock of over-the-counter medicines and get more if you’re running low.

Should I have my wisdom teeth removed at age 30?

Ideally, you should have third molars removed as soon as your X-rays indicate trouble on the horizon. For most people, waiting until the age 30 may cause complications. Delaying surgery can lengthen your recovery time. A wisdom tooth tends to wear out its welcome when most patients are between 17 and 25.

What are the risks involved with wisdom teeth removal?

Virtually any type of surgical procedure poses somewhat of a risk. While uncommon, having your third molars taken out could potentially result in:

  • Dry socket. This rare condition occurs when a blood clot fails to form in the socket where the tooth once was. A sharp pain can be felt.
  • Exposed sinus cavity. Upper wisdom teeth roots and your maxillary sinus cavity may become too close for comfort. An extraction in these instances could potentially leave a hole behind. The opening will need to be properly closed to prevent infection.
  • Infection. While slim, there’s still a chance that an infection can develop after wisdom teeth removal. Follow aftercare instructions to make sure you’re doing your part to heal.
  • Nerve damage. Numbness that doesn’t seem to be going away in parts of the mouth can indicate a problem. Such issues usually go away on their own.

If you feel like you’re experiencing any of these conditions, call us immediately! Nothing is more important than your health!

You can rest easy knowing you’re in capable hands at Smiles by Hanna. We take every precaution to minimize risks and protect your health. Dr. Mansoor’s high level of skill and top-notch equipment make our office a dental rejuvenation den.

What happens if you wait too long to get a wisdom teeth removal?

Address this situation before it gets out of hand. Related complications of wisdom teeth removal include:

  • Clenching
  • Facial swelling
  • Greater chance of bad breath
  • Gum disease
  • Headaches
  • High blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes
  • Infection
  • Jaw cysts, spasms and/or tumors
  • Misaligned teeth
  • PAIN!!!
  • Problems with other teeth
  • Swollen lymph nodes

What is the oldest age you can get wisdom teeth?

No mouth is exactly the same. Most people get wisdom teeth by the time they reach their mid-20s. A select few never get a set of third molars. And 94-year-old Robert Gray set the record in 2017 for the world’s oldest person who had a wisdom tooth erupt.

Which tooth is most difficult to extract?

Many dental professionals will agree that an impacted wisdom tooth can be tough to remove. Third molars are located about as far back as possible, so they’re difficult to access. Any of these teeth that come in at odd angles, have a curve and/or include abnormally shaped roots can be especially difficult to extract.

Who performs wisdom teeth removals?

An oral surgeon or specially trained dentist can perform wisdom teeth removal. There may be instances where a patient is referred to a hospital if specific complications are present.

Will my insurance cover wisdom teeth removal surgery?

Most insurance plans cover a portion of wisdom teeth removal costs. The percentage the provider pays varies based on your particular plan and the exact procedure you’ll be having done. Get specific policy information by contacting your insurance company directly.

Will wisdom teeth removal hurt if I’m awake?

No! If you only need a simple wisdom teeth removal, then a local anesthetic may be used. You remain aware and awake during the procedure. You’ll be able to hear and see everything. You may feel pressure as work is done but it shouldn’t hurt at all.
