Portrait of a happy senior couple embracing and looking at cameraIf you’re a Gilbert dental patient considering All-on-4® dental implants, you’ve probably already guessed that the recovery process from replacing an entire arch – or your entire mouthful – of teeth is going to be more involved than if you were simply replacing one missing tooth with a dental implant. But what is the recovery process like, and what special care instructions must you follow as you recover? Read on as Dr. Mansoor of Smiles by Hanna explains in detail.

You May Feel More Tender if You Had Tooth Extractions

Some Gilbert dental patients who choose All-on-4® dental implants are already missing all their teeth. Others have just a few remaining teeth but choose to have those extracted so that they can have a complete smile makeover.

Keep in mind; teeth extractions are a completely separate surgery. If you have teeth extracted so your dental implants can be placed, you’ll need to eat a soft food diet for the first few days after your extractions, refrain from using a straw (which can dislodge the blood clot that naturally forms over your jawbone and cause a painful side effect called dry socket), and refrain from nicotine usage.

Expect it to Take Several Months for Your Implants to Fully Fuse with Your Jawbone

The magic behind All-on-4® dental implants is that the titanium rods fuse with your jawbone tissue, creating a permanent bond that not only keeps your implants in your mouth for a lifetime when you care for them properly but also stimulates and preserves your jawbone tissue.

This fusion can take several months to complete, though. As your implants are fusing with your jawbone tissue, you’ll need to take precautions so that you don’t inadvertently interfere with the fusion process. These precautions include eating a special diet of softer foods and refraining from all nicotine usage – including smoking, vaping, and chewing tobacco – has nicotine usage is known to impede implant fusion and cause dental implant failure.

Anticipate the Day You’ll Have Your Permanent Implant Crowns

You won’t walk out of a Gilbert All-on-4® dental implants appointment without any teeth, but the crowns that will be initially placed will be temporary. Through your follow up appointments with Dr. Mansoor at Smiles by Hanna, she will track your mouth’s recovery process – as well as how well the titanium rods are fusing with your jawbone – to determine when it’s time to have your permanent implant crowns placed.

This day is like the prom or your wedding day! Not only will you get a fabulous pair of new teeth, but you’ll finally be able to bite, chew, and eat anything you want. While Gilbert’s Dr. Mansoor still recommends you refrain from smoking (nicotine usage may cause a rare dental implants complication called peri-implantitis), if you’ve got a craving you just can’t kick, smoking, vaping, and chewing tobacco can be resumed at this time.
